How to Free Up Disk Space Safely
Safe disk cleanup means you can name the files you are removing and you know how to get them back if you were wrong. The Windows screens below are review tools. They are not a reason to delete unfamiliar system files by hand.
Updated October 21, 2026. Windows menus can differ by version and by settings on the PC.
Review first
-
Read Storage settings
Open Start, Settings, System, Storage. Note free space and the largest categories. Cleanup recommendations, when Windows shows them, are suggestions to read, not a list to accept in one click.
-
Decide how Storage Sense should behave
Storage Sense can remove temporary files and, on its own schedule, items that have stayed in the Recycle Bin. It runs on the system drive. Downloads and cloud content stay put unless you opt in. Microsoft’s guide covers the switches.
-
Clear temporary files from the settings list
Open Temporary files, read each checkbox, and use Remove files. That screen is the supported way to remove a previous Windows installation. You do not need to hunt down C:\Windows\Temp or delete Windows.old yourself.
-
Look inside the Recycle Bin
Open it and scan for files you still want. Restore those first. Emptying the bin is a permanent step for everything left inside.
-
Review the Downloads folder
Sort by size. Installers can go after the app is installed, if you do not need the installer again. Documents that landed there are personal files. Storage Sense will not clean this folder unless you turned that option on.
-
Remove old personal files you recognize
Videos, disk images, and duplicate exports are common wins. If you cannot say what a file is, leave it until you can.
Storage Sense in practice
With the default settings, Storage Sense is off until you enable it or Windows turns it on during low free space and tells you. When it runs, it can clean temporary files that are not in use. Recycle Bin contents can be deleted after they have sat there for the period you choose. Items in Downloads, and cloud files that can become online-only, change only if you set that behavior. The controls apply to your account. Someone else who signs in manages their own.
Storage Sense does not free space on a data drive that is not the system drive. For those volumes, Storage settings includes Storage used on other drives under Advanced storage settings. You still review the files yourself.
The vendor description is Manage drive space with Storage Sense.
Move files instead of deleting them
A second drive is often a better home for videos and disk images than the Recycle Bin. Copy the folder, open several files from the new location, and only then delete the original. Under Advanced storage settings, “Where new content is saved” lets you choose a different drive for new apps, documents, music, pictures, or videos. That setting changes the default for future files. It does not move the library you already have.
A short checklist before you remove something
-
I know what it is
The name, the app that created it, or the day I downloaded it is familiar.
-
I can afford to lose this copy
Another copy exists, or the file was an installer I can download again from the publisher.
-
I am in a personal folder or a Windows cleanup screen
Settings, the Recycle Bin, Downloads, or another folder I created. Not a system directory I opened out of curiosity.
If the drive is full and the categories are confusing, pause on the troubleshooting workflow. To see which personal folder is heavy before you move it, use the folder measurement steps. The storage calculator can rehearse the arithmetic: capacity, used space, and the gigabytes you plan to add.
